Fifty years ago Robert Hunter presented an extremely complex composition to Jerry Garcia. Garcia, after studying the six songs of the "Eagle Mall Suite," said, "Look, Hunter! We're a goddamn dance band! At least write something with a beat!" and then tossed the poetry aside.
But, always a sucker for a fool's errand, Viva la Muerte has resurrected the project. "Lay of the Ring" is both a song and an historical document. Robert Hunter died last year, but the Dead’s words live on. VLM cut up the epic “Eagle Mall Suite” into one single song and last year we recorded this new track with Scott Guberman of Phil and Friends. Thus, here during #DeadCoversProject month, VLM and Scott Guberman present “Lay of the Ring.”
